Il 14 ottobre 1494 l’Imperatore concesse al signore di Bologna il privilegio di battere moneta. Francesco Francia, (1450/53 - 1517), fu un grande orefice e pittore. La medaglia è attribuita al Francia dal Vasari: “ Oltre che fece le medaglie del Sign Giovanni Bentivogli, che par vivo, e di d’infiniti principi, i quali nel passaggio di Bologna si fermavano, ed egli faceva le medaglie ritratte in cera, e poi finite le madri de’ coni le mandava loro: di che oltra la immortalità della fama, trasse ancora presenti grandissimi”.
