Figlio di Pietro Leopoldo di Toscana e di Maria Ludovica di Spagna, nacque a Pisa nel 1783. Dal 3 gennaio 1818 fu dall’Imperatore creato vicerè della Lombardia. Nel 1820, sposò Maria Elisabetta di Savoia - Carignano, sorella di Carlo Alberto.
